BAFTA award-winning drama The Murder of Stephen Lawrence is getting a sequel.

On Monday (July 13), ITV announced that it has commissioned Stephen, with the "full support" of Stephen's parents Baroness Doreen Lawrence and Neville Lawrence.

Originally aired in 1999, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence depicted the tragic murder of the 18-year-old in April 1993 in a racially motivated attack at a bus stop in South London.

The three-part sequel will pick up from 2006 and follow the Lawrence family and detective DCI Clive Driscoll as they put together an investigation that secures the conviction of two of Stephen's murderers Gary Dobson and David Norris more than 18 years after his death.

The Murder of Stephen Lawrence will also be repeated on ITV on Thursday (July 16).

A live discussion programme titled Stephen Lawrence: Has Britain changed? will air immediately before the re-broadcast.

"I am pleased that The Murder of Stephen Lawrence is being broadcast again," said Baroness Doreen Lawrence.

"I hope that the film and the drama which has been commissioned will provide some insight into what we went through and give some hope to others that justice can eventually prevail."

Neville Lawrence added: "I welcome the announcement of this new TV series by ITV, made with members of the same team who wrote and produced the 1999 original drama. That first film was important in telling Stephen’s story.

"It is important that the next part of the story is told, particularly at a time when, thanks to the Black Lives Matter campaign, concerns around institutional racism are so prominent."
