A month after Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner pulled their children out of school amid complaints that they weren’t following COVID-19 safety guidelines, it seems the first daughter and her family are finally masking up. At least, that’s what we can gather from photos of the Trump-Kushners at the White House’s annual turkey-pardoning event.

“Meet Corn, the National Thanksgiving Turkey as President Trump continued a beloved @WhiteHouse tradition,” Trump captioned a photo of herself, Kushner, and their three children, Arabella, Theodore, and Joseph. “With their Thanksgiving turkey duties complete, Corn (and Cob) will retire to Iowa State University!”

Though her own Twitter post featured the family alone and maskless, during the outdoor ceremony they all a kept their masks on.

This is in contrast to many of Ivanka Trump’s previous appearances at outdoor events during her father’s 2020 presidential campaign. She wore a mask at some indoor events, but she has often been pictured not wearing a mask at large gatherings, just like the rest of her family. Most famously, she and her siblings removed their masks as they sat in the audience for the first presidential debate in September. Just days later, it was revealed that President Trump and Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19.

These public instances in which the family disregarded mask and social-distancing rules were the source of complaints at Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School in D.C., where the Kushner kids were enrolled.

“At the same time of rising cases in the states and children going back to school, we were seeing the Kushners violating quarantine requirements,” a mother at the school told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

But this week, the whole family appeared to be in full compliance. Perhaps it was the news that, among the many new cases during this second COVID wave, Ivanka’s older brother Donald Trump Jr. also tested positive for the virus over the weekend. Or perhaps this is one more step in what Vanity Fair’s Bess Levin called the first daughter’s “extremely frantic damage control mode.” As the Trumps prepare to leave the White House and decide their next move, Ivanka has taken to Twitter to try to share the kind of news she thinks people will still praise her for. She posted news about greenhouse gasses being down in 2020, and of the stock market’s record high.

The former of those bits of news is likely because of the pandemic, the latter is in spite of it and not an indication of how America is doing as the coronavirus continues to take its toll. Twitter is not going to let her paint this sunny picture on her way out the door. Mask or no mask.
