The Catch-up: so just how bad is Ivanka's embarrassing 'butting-in' video?

What happened?

Ivanka Trump has faced criticism and mockery after a video emerged showing her attempt to join a conversation between four world leaders. The footage, released by the French Government, shows President Trump's daughter standing with French president Emmanuel Macron, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, International Monetary Fund director Christine Lagarde and British prime minister Theresa May as the leaders speak. Ms Trump is seen nodding and saying 'yeah' as President Macron speaks about social justice.

How bad is it?

A number of commenters on social media have pointed out how embarrassing the moment is for Ms Trump, referring in particular to the way the IMF director appears to roll her eyes. But on top of that the footage has sparked debate about the question of nepotism on the part of the US President.

New York Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that the situation is harmful to the US's diplomatic standing. She wrote: “It may be shocking to some, but being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification. The US needs our president working the G20. Bringing a qualified diplomat couldn’t hurt either.”

Ivanka is officially a 'senior adviser' to her father Donald Trump and plays a key role in his administration despite no previous diplomatic experience. Her unprecedented role has raised eyebrows in the past, such as when she stood in on behalf of her father at the 2017 G20 summit in a meeting of elected world leaders.
