J.C. Penney has added a pair of New York stores to its list of permanent closures, bringing the current closings list to 150 locations.

When the closing Brooklyn store in Kings Plaza will begin its liquidation sale was not announced as of Wednesday, while the location in the Manhattan Mall is now listed as "permanently closed," according to the retailer's closing official list and court records.

J.C. Penney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection May 15 after years of sales declines and two months of disruption from the coronavirus pandemic. It said it plans to close about 29% of its 846 stores or 242 locations in bankruptcy and hopes to use the process to shed debt and remain in business.

A second wave of closings started July 3 at 13 additional stores (see the list here).

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the store liquidation sales will be handled differently from past liquidations. Fewer shoppers will be allowed into stores because of social distancing guidelines and stores continue to operate on shortened hours.
