J.K. Rowling returns human rights award linked to Kennedy family amid criticism of her anti-transgender views

J.K. Rowling is returning an award presented by the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights organization after its president, Kerry Kennedy, criticized her anti-transgender views.

In a statement published on her website Thursday, the creator of the “Harry Potter” universe vehemently denied that her comments on transgender people should be understood as transphobic.

In several instances dating back to March 2018 — when the author liked a tweet that referred to trans women as “men in dresses” — Rowling has consistently raised some eyebrows with her very public comments on transgender issues.

Earlier this summer, the controversial British author mocked an op-ed which used the phrase “people who menstruate.”
