Ja Morant doubtful to play Saturday against the Utah Jazz

Ja Morant is unlikely to play Saturday against the Utah Jazz. Morant was listed as doubtful on the Memphis Grizzlies injury report due to a non-COVID illness.

The Grizzlies' backcourt was already short-handed before Morant landed on the injury report. John Konchar, who missed Thursday's game against the Sacramento Kings, is questionable on Saturday due to shoulder soreness.

Morant, Tyus Jones and Desmond Bane split most of the minutes without Konchar. If Morant doesn't play, the Grizzlies will either use Desmond Bane in a similar role as last season, when he started games but played point guard on the second unit, or give rotation minutes to rookie Kennedy Chandler.

The Grizzlies have Chandler and two-way rookie Vince Williams Jr. as other options who could provide backcourt depth.

Morant is averaging 32.6 points and 6.8 assists in five games. He's shooting 52.9% from the field and 56.5% on 3-pointers. The Grizzlies went 19-4 last season in games started by Jones.
