Remember that whole Shut Up and Dribble thing? Back in 2018, journalist Laura Ingraham told NBA star LeBron James—after he made a few comments criticizing President Trump—to "shut up and dribble," live on FOX News. Since then, the phrase has become a sort of rallying cry for the never-Kaepernickers, basically telling any athletes with a political opinion to keep it to themselves.
On Thursday night, the cult of Shut Up and Dribble found itself in a bit of a pickle. First, golfing all-timer Jack Nicklaus penned a sprawling statement endorsing Donald Trump for president. The longtime friend and supporter of Trump wrote that the president “has been more diverse than any President I have seen and has tried to help people from all walks of life—equally.” The next morning, former NFL quarterback Brett Favre endorsed Trump as well, adding, “My Vote is for what makes this country great, freedom of speech & religion, 2nd Amnd, hard working tax paying citizens, police & military.” To make the trifecta: Another former quarterback, Jay Cutler, backed up Nicklaus’s words via Instagram story, writing, “SIGN ME UP.”
Hm. That sure is a lot of athletes talking about politics! Which is fine, of course, but a little hypocritical of the Shut Up and Dribblers. Favre said to Trump just the other week: “The NBA and the NFL are struggling with lower ratings, as fans clearly do not want political messaging mixed with their sports.” This Friday, even Ingraham retweeted an article from The Washington Times about Cutler's endorsement. At the very, very least, get your messaging straight, and figure out definitively whether or not you like your big football men to stick to going boom or not.
