Remember that whole Shut Up and Dribble thing? Back in 2018, journalist Laura Ingraham told NBA star LeBron James—after he made a few comments criticizing President Trump—to "shut up and dribble," live on FOX News. Since then, the phrase has become a sort of rallying cry for the never-Kaepernickers, basically telling any athletes with a political opinion to keep it to themselves.
On Thursday night, the cult of Shut Up and Dribble found itself in a bit of a pickle. First, golfing all-timer Jack Nicklaus penned a sprawling statement endorsing Donald Trump for president. The longtime friend and supporter of Trump wrote that the president “has been more diverse than any President I have seen and has tried to help people from all walks of life—equally.” The next morning, former NFL quarterback Brett Favre endorsed Trump as well, adding, “My Vote is for what makes this country great, freedom of speech & religion, 2nd Amnd, hard working tax paying citizens, police & military.” To make the trifecta: Another former quarterback, Jay Cutler, backed up Nicklaus’s words via Instagram story, writing, “SIGN ME UP.”
Hm. That sure is a lot of athletes talking about politics! Which is fine, of course, but a little hypocritical of the Shut Up and Dribblers. Favre said to Trump just the other week: “The NBA and the NFL are struggling with lower ratings, as fans clearly do not want political messaging mixed with their sports.” This Friday, even Ingraham retweeted an article from The Washington Times about Cutler's endorsement. At the very, very least, get your messaging straight, and figure out definitively whether or not you like your big football men to stick to going boom or not.
So yeah! There most definitely is a sizable armada on Twitter roasting the hell out of these boys. Here’s what they’ve had to say.
African American superstar Lebron James tells people to vote and Trump supporters say "shut up and dribble"
Retired white football star Brett Favre tells people to vote for Trump, and Trump supporters shower him with praise.

A reminder that @brettfavre — a man whose biography I wrote — also took pictures of his shriveled penis and texted them to a woman he didn't know. So judgement, eh, not really his thing. https://t.co/VHlMiSxJ41

With the Jack Nicklaus/Jay Cutler endorsements -just want to point out other Trump supporters are praising them. Meaning they actually do love when athletes have political opinions! They just dont like when it’s different from theirs. Why don’t those two have to shut up and play?

Jay Cutler was famous for always throwing to the wrong team during crunch time so this makes sense for him https://t.co/ZryVquZoKi

Jay Cutler also endorsed throwing five interceptions to the Green Bay Packers every game

If Brett Favre, Jack Nicklaus, Lil Wayne, and Lil Pump all support Trump, imagine what kind of broad coalition exists out there in the electorate.

Happy to see Jay Cutler endorse Donald Trump since he’s never actually been on a winning team.

Who knew 2020 would be the year I'd finally learn the difference between Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

How nice that Jack Nicklaus has “learned to look past” racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism and the deaths of nearly 230K Americans...
And by nice, I mean privileged... https://t.co/xff8U9EQvH— Melissa Blake (@melissablake) October 29, 2020
Remember that time Brett Favre took $1.1m for lectures from the state of Mississippi, then never made an appearance and was forced to pay it back? This was 10 years after he sent lewd texts to a female sportscaster.
Makes sense he endorsed Trump.https://t.co/HtFSrx2wyF— Sensei Ryan (Once and Future) (@horridpoplyrics) October 30, 2020

Brett Favre is in the news today. I just checked with the state auditor’s office, and, no, Brett has not finished paying back the $1.1 million of welfare money that he said he would. https://t.co/llgIwUM4tS

somehow the most embarrassing thing to ever come from Brett Favre’s phone https://t.co/oQkYAe0kj5

I think it's wonderful news that Brett Favre endorsed Donald Trump. Given how many games he's thrown away with his career NFL records for interceptions, fumbles, and sacks, this is further confirmation Trump will lose on Tuesday. Thank you for this gift, Mr. Favre. https://t.co/OAsnDsIIiF
