Jack Nicklaus won't bet on Ohio State, but Golden Bear thinks Ryan Day is smart money

Jack Nicklaus ate dinner with Ryan Day last week and came away impressed by the Ohio State football coach.

"First time I had actually met Ryan. What a nice young man," the 82-year-old Nicklaus said Tuesday during an hour-long media session at Muirfield Village Golf Club, site of the Memorial Tournament that tees off Thursday.

"I would call him a young man," Nicklaus said, smiling, of the 43-year-old coach. "Got his head screwed on great. He says he's looking forward to this year. He's going to have a great team."

Just don't look for Nicklaus to put his money where his OSU expectation is.

"I have never placed a bet on the Buckeyes," he said at the end of a discussion on golf betting. "I just wish them well."

Nicklaus, who is friends with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, is one of a select few who have dotted the "i" during the OSU Marching Band's performance of Script Ohio. The Bear played golf for the Buckeyes before turning professional in 1961.
