UPDATE: I-65 near Dayton exit open after jackknife semi crash

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Indiana State Police reported late Thursday afternoon that Interstate 65 is back open after a morning closure caused by a jackknifed semi.

An icy Interstate 65 turned into a traffic hazard for motorists Thursday morning, spawning several accidents, one of which closed southbound lanes north of the Indiana 38/Dayton exit, Indiana State Police Sgt. Jeremy Piers confirmed.

By 11 a.m. Thursday, the jackknifed semi was lodged onto a guard rail and blocking both southbound lanes, Piers confirmed.

Northbound traffic slowed to a crawl north of the Indiana 38/Dayton exit, according to police. Piers noted that the slowed northbound traffic was likely from gawkers looking at the wreck.

The Waze traffic app indicated that the accidents in the Lafayette area were causing traffic backups from north of the Indiana 43 exit all the way to the just north of the Indiana 47/Thorntown exit in Boone County.

There are no reports of serious injuries, Piers said early in the accident investigation.

The semi also was leaking fuel, and Tippecanoe County Emergency Management was responding to that hazardous material spill.

Indiana State Police also responded to other property damage accidents in the areas north and south of the jackknifed semi, Piers said.
