Jackson Boat Landing's new name honors Sullivan
Jan. 8—The Jackson Boat Landing has a new name.
It now is known as the Lynn R. Sullivan/Jackson Boat Landing and Recreation Area.
Aiken County Council unanimously approved a resolution making the change during its Jan. 4 meeting at the Aiken County Government Center.
The boat landing is on land along the Savannah River that the county leases.
Sullivan is a member of Jackson Town Council.
According to the resolution, County Council is recognizing Sullivan for "her tireless work on behalf of the Town of Jackson and the residents of Aiken County and surrounding areas that utilize the Jackson Boat Landing for fun recreational activities."
The resolution also states that Sullivan's "support helped secure funding for the recent major upgrades and improvements" that were made at the boat landing.
In addition, the resolution praises Sullivan for organizing, arranging and providing oversight for various events and activities in Jackson.
The resolution describes Sullivan as "an avid member" of Silver Bluff High School's booster club and "the driving force behind the creation and growth" of Jackson's Hook and Cook Festival.
Sullivan's duties as a Town Council member include the supervision of Jackson's Parks and Recreation Department, which has "made great strides under her leadership," according to the resolution.
County Council Chairman Gary Bunker and Council member Camille Furgiuele, who represents District 2 (where Jackson is located), presented a copy of the resolution to Sullivan on Jan. 4.
"I was very honored and very emotional because of my love for the river and fishing," Sullivan told the Aiken Standard in a telephone interview Friday.
She also was surprised by the honor.
"My husband asked me to go to the County Council meeting with him, and I said, 'Absolutely,'" Sullivan said. "And he didn't have any idea either. He was just told he needed to be at the meeting and have me come with him."
Sullivan's husband, Patrick, is an Aiken County magistrate judge.
