Attendees at Monroe County Fair were treated to country sounds that blended old-school songwriting with modern energy during a concert Saturday.

The Aug. 5 show featured young country artist Jackson Dean as the headliner, with longtime country songwriter Caitlyn Smith opening.

Dean, who recently rose to fame thanks to both viral videos and a song featured on popular television show “Yellowstone,” is only 22 years old, but his sound harkens back to the time of Outlaw Country artists such as Waylon Jennings. His single “Don’t Come Lookin’” made Dean the youngest male artist to top the country charts with a debut release.

Mike and Jennifer Tews attended the show, and they have seen Dean perform several times. The couple agreed that Dean blends elements in his music that are not often heard in today’s country music.

“I love his voice,” Jennifer Tews said.

“He’s got an old soul,” Mike Tews added.

Mike Tews said his favorite Dean song is “Trailer Park,” which was one of the first few songs of the night. Jennifer Tews named “Wings” as her favorite.

At a previous show, the Tews spotted the band at their merchandise table, and Dean appeared himself.

“They were super nice,” Jennifer Tews said.

Smith warmed up the crowd prior to Dean’s performance. She is a well-established Nashville songwriter who has penned pieces for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Meghan Trainor, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, and more.

Smith is an accomplished performer in her own right as well, opening for and collaborating with prolific country artists such as George Strait and Old Dominion.

Smith brought significant enthusiasm and energy to her live show, and she was quick to share news that she is currently an expecting mother.

“The Good Lord has blessed me with two boys, and y’all, this is another one,” Smith said. “I’m raising a rock band.”

The concert was the second main feature show at the 2023 Monroe County Fair grandstand, with the other being Yung Gravy and BBNO$ on July 31.
