Jackson Invitational: Morgan Baker and David Fowler lead the Comet cross country teams

JACKSON — Jonesville Comet cross country teams joined Hillsdale Academy and Hanover-Horton in competing at the Jackson Invitational. Comet teams competed in the boys and girls red division races.

Final Team Results

Hanover-Horton won the boys red division race. Hillsdale Academy continues their recent trend upward as one of the top groups in Division 4 with another top three finish. Manchester took third overall.

The Jonesville Comets finished just behind Onsted in sixth overall. The top 10 finish saw Jonesville have several runner place in the top 50 overall.

Boys Results

The event was won by senior Rogan Melling of Hanover-Horton. Hanover-Horton had two runners finish in the top three. Senior Nathan Kippnick of Manchester took second overall.

Junior David Fowler is in his first cross country season for the Comets. Fowler took 25th overall to lead the Comet boys cross country team at the Jackson Invitational. It is his second top 25 finish this season. The junior placed in the top 10 overall at the Leslie Invitational earlier this month and Fowler continues to improve his times. He had his personal best time of his career this Saturday in Jackson: 18:09.4

Zachery Childress took 31st overall at the Invite. The sophomore is in his second season running for the Comets. To start the season, Childress was looking to reach his personal record from last season of a time of 19:12.8, a number he earned at the regional finals. Childress had yet to crack that record this season, but the sophomore has improved on his times each race. He beat that record this Saturday in Jackson, earning a final time of 18:20.8, close to a minute faster than his previous record.

Junior Mytchal Morrison is in his third season of running for the Comets. Morrison has two top 10 and one top five finish this season (fifth at Leslie Invite). The junior has improved on his times with each race so far this season. He finished 32nd overall in Jackson with a time of 18:29.2. It's a new season record for Morrison and was three seconds shy of his personal best.

Junior Gavin VanKampen is a three-year runner for the Comets. The junior has placed consistently in the top 15 in each race this season. He has a top five finish from his fourth place run at Pittsford to start the year. The junior placed 35th overall in Jackson with a time of 18:39.7. His season record is 18:03.7 and his personal record is a 17:39.0 run at the LP D3 state finals last season.

Freshman Nicholas Fowler is in his first season of running for the Varsity Comets. Fowler placed 38th overall and posted a career best time of 18:47.3. The freshman has one top 15 finish this year (at the Leslie Invitational).

Lucas Kyser is also a freshman for the varsity Comet boys team. He placed 39th overall with a time of 18:52.5, a personal record. The freshman has come a long way since his 21:17.5 final time to start the season. The freshman has posted one top 15 finish this season.

Jacob Norman started running for the Comets last season. The junior finished 43rd overall in Jackson. Norman finished with a time of 19:08.7, a personal record time. The junior has consistently cracked last season's personal best time and he has set a new personal best time in four races this season.

Nathan More started running for the Comets this year. The sophomore finished in 70th overall with a time of 21:15.7. More earned a personal record time of 20:50.6 at the Hillsdale Invitational. The freshman is currently on track to get back to that time in the upcoming Comet events.

Freshman Ryder Cornett took 71st overall at Jackson with a final time of 21:16.6. The freshman's result is his personal best time so far in his career. His last personal record time was 21:31.4

Maysun Strachan finished 89th overall at the Jackson Invitational. His final time was 23:53.7. The freshman earned his personal best time last week at the Holly Invitational: 22:26.5

Girls Results

Junior Comet Morgan Baker had the best finish for the girls cross country team at the Jackson Invitational. Baker finished 52nd overall and ran a season best time of 24:50.4. The Junior hit a personal record time of 22:59.3 her freshman year at a regional final. Baker has one top 15 and one top 20 finish this season.

Zoey Udzik is in her third season running for the varsity Comets. Udzik ran a season-best time of 25:21.6 in Jackson, earning a 54th overall finish. The junior is chasing her 24:25.0 personal best that was earned as a freshman.

Presley Adams has run only two races for the Comets this season. Adams finished 60th overall at the Jackson Invitational with a time of 25:52.1. The final result was a personal record for Adams.

Junior Hailie James returns to cross country for the Comets this season. James took 64th at the Jackson Invitational. The junior earned a personal record time of 26:07.5

Jonesville senior Piper Zigray took 67th overall at the Jackson Invitational. She earned a season record time of 26:28.7. The senior looks to beat her personal record time of 26:28.0 this year.

Jalynn Bragg is running in her first season for the Comets. Bragg earned a career-best time of 30:30.4 at the Jackson Invitational. The junior took 75th overall.

The Comets look to improve on their times next Tuesday when they travel to Springport for a Big 8 jamboree.
