Jackson Township man gets lengthy prison term for 2022 crash that killed John Pappas

CANTON ‒ A 27-year-old Jackson Township man will spend at least a decade in prison for a deadly drunk-driving crash in September.

Jacob L. Muiter pleaded guilty Friday in Stark County Common Pleas Court to two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless vehicle operation and speeding.

Judge Frank Forchione sentenced Muiter to 10 to 13 ½ years in prison. Muiter was immediately taken into custody.

Court records show that Muiter’s blood-alcohol level was nearly three times higher than the legal driving limit and he had amphetamines in his system on Sept. 11 when he drove his 2014 Chevrolet Silverado across the center line on Strausser Street NW in Jackson Township.

Muiter’s truck struck a 2017 Toyota driven by John Pappas, 53, with passenger Kristine Pappas, both of Lake Township, according to court and police records.

John Pappas died at the scene. Kristine Pappas suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital where she was later released.
