Jacksonville Beach Pier could be open by July 4, according to city leaders

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla-- The highly anticipated re-opening of the Jacksonville Beach pier could be closer than we think.

Action News Jax confirmed through the City of Jacksonville and Beaches City Councilman Rory Diamond that the pier should be opening in a few weeks. The specific date is still being finalized.

“We think the pier is going to open in just a few weeks or so,” Councilman Diamond said. “That July 4th weekend, looks like we’re gonna be right around there.”

Marica Mann has lived in Jacksonville for 32 years. She said she’s looking forward to a clear path and beautiful views during her beach walks.

“I love seeing the people fishing off the pier, ‘cause it was so Florida,” Mann said. “I’m kind of tired of seeing all the construction equipment.”

City Councilman Rory Diamond and Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman toured the newly renovated pier on Wednesday.

Brand new photographs show the pier is angled slightly higher with stronger beams.

“It’s gonna be a busy hurricane season, but this is supposed to be a 100-year pier,” Councilman Diamond said. “You’ll see how it angles up and goes up almost 12 more feet. We should be 12 feet higher than we were before.”

The councilman acknowledges it took a long time to get here.

“I share everybody’s frustrations,” Councilman Diamond said. “We wanted to have this thing open as fast as possible.”

He said the biggest hurdles were COVID-19 and getting permits from the Army Corps of Engineers.

This story will be updated once an exact re-opening date becomes available.
