During a tropical storm or hurricane, the biggest threats to life and property often come from storm surges and flooding from rain.

To help residents determine whether their homes are in danger, evacuation zones have been established. Here's what you need to know.

What evacuation zone am I in?

In Duval County, learn your evacuation zone by downloading the JaxReady app or going to JaxReady.com. Knowing your zone lets you know when an evacuation has been ordered in your area, and downloading the app lets you receive weather alerts and information on shelter openings and availability. The shelters being opened, and which ones will have room, will depend on circumstances in a particular storm. Having the app lets you get up-to-date information.

When should I evacuate?

When a hurricane or tropical storm approaches, emergency management officials will put out evacuation announcements well before the storm hits, which will be released through the mayor and other public officials.

Do I have to evacuate?

Zones A & B are mandatory evacuation zones and residents who live there must evacuate when local officials order an evacuation.
