New Jacksonville ice cream shop features 36 flavors, including Jag Claw, Squirrel Bait

Ice cream fans will be hard-pressed to exhaust all the sweet flavor combinations on the menu of an old-fashioned, family-oriented ice cream parlor just opened by a Jacksonville husband and wife in Five Points.

Waffle Cone began serving up scoops of its 36 hand-dipped flavors of classic and soft-serve ice cream in homemade waffle bowls and cones this month at 822 Post St.

"I think we definitely have an old-fashioned feel while still looking modern. But we have something for everyone. So you can bring the whole family because we have dairy-free, we have gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan," Cassidy Darmata, who along with her Realtor husband, Seth, own the business.

"But then we also have the old-fashioned traditional ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and everything like that so everyone can find what they want," she told the Times-Union.

The ice cream parlor also offers some homemade baked goods and a small marketplace showcasing items from local small businesses.

The Five Points shop is the second ice cream parlor in the couple's family. The original Waffle Cone in Flagler Beach is owned by her parents, Mike and Holly Wehde, who in 2019 bought the 12-year-old beachfront mainstay.

Residents of historic Riverside, the Darmatas dreamt of establishing a community- and family-oriented ice cream shop mirroring her parents' business in Flagler Beach.

The Five Points ice cream parlor renovated the storefront formerly used by the Glass Bottle Society between Corner Taco and Hawkers Asian Street Food.

On opening day, customers packed the ice cream parlor to get a scoop or two or a flight of the Waffle Cone ice cream.

"The first flavor we ran out of was Raspberry Haze and then Cookies and Cream," Cassidy Darmata said of the early customer favorites.

Signature flavors include Jag Claw, chocolate ice cream with caramel swirls and chocolate-covered cashews; Raspberry Haze, featuring a creamy raspberry base with chocolate chips "bursting with raspberry filling,"; and Squirrel Bait, chocolate ice cream with mixed nuts.

"A lot of our flavors already have things mixed in but of course, we have a lot of toppings, so you can mix anything you want into to a milkshake, into your ice cream," she said.

The crispy sweet waffle cones and bowls are made fresh daily and also come dipped in chocolate.

In general, the prices range from about $4 up to $7 for one person, she said.

The shop's ice cream flights, she said, have been really popular.

"We have six half-scoops for $8.50. So it's a great deal on flights. A lot of people have been getting those to share and you can try six different flavors, Darmata said.

"Say one person is dairy-free so they will get three dairy-free flavors and three regular flavors," she said.

Waffle Cone is open noon to 9:30 p.m. daily.
