Jacksonville schools, city offices, more close due to severe weather threat on Tuesday
With the threat of severe weather across much of Northeast Florida today, a number of schools, government offices and other places of business have announced plans to close.
The closings are in reaction to warnings from the National Weather Service, which said “numerous severe thunderstorms are possible” when a cold front approaches Northeast Florida from the west. The greatest impacts near Jacksonville are expected around the Tuesday evening rush hour, the weather service said. Already Tuesday morning, several tornadoes have been reported in the Florida Pandhandle.
The storm threat, which officials said might carry a risk of isolated tornadoes, was announced as parts of the South braced for spreading effects from Winter Storm Finn, which had earlier affected the Midwest. Gov. Ron DeSantis activated the Florida State Guard Monday as part of an effort to prepare for storm impacts statewide and declared a state of emergency in 49 counties Tuesday.
