Jacksonville students part of Team Resistance earns top awards in Orlando regional competition

It was a powerful performance put on by a local robotics team.

Team Resistance, made up of 51 Jacksonville students, won the Orlando Regional Industrial Design Award at the annual FIRST Orlando Regional Robotics Competition from Mar. 16 to Mar. 18. The team was presented with the win for having an elegant and functional robot design.

The team’s robot, Ohmer The Cone Reaper, was designed to pick up cones from the floor and place them on the scoring platform. Operating on 100 percent solar power, Ohmer was the first solar powered robot to ever enter the competition.

Organized by the Florida FIRST Robotics Education Foundation, this regional contest empowers youth to be leaders and innovators, and to reimagine the future. A total of 51 Jacksonville students were on Team Resistance this season, and 32 of them, along with many family members and team mentors, made the trip to Orlando for the competition.

The team will meet next on Tues., Mar. 21, for additional practice with Ohmer before heading to the Tallahassee Regional competition on Thur., Mar. 23 at 6 p.m.
