Jacksonville veterans town hall is set for Thursday to address accountability of the military and VA

Veteran advocates are coming to Jacksonville on Thursday to launch a town hall and want to hear from retired members of military service.

Speakers at the free Vets4Vets town hall will discuss accountability on all levels of the military as well as at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The gathering is set for 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Salem Centre at 7235 Bonneval Road on the Southside, beginning with a $50 VIP dinner at 5 p.m. to meet the speakers. A social follows at 6 p.m., then 7 p.m. meeting.

Guest speakers include Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller and U.S. Navy veteran Rob Hollingsworth, as well as Kate Monroe of Vetcomm, Jason Gilbert of the Disabled Veterans PAC, Lt. Col. Bob Adelhelm of the Jacksonville Semper Fidelis Society and others.

Vets4Vets said planned areas of discussion include:

• Holding military and political leaders accountable for national security and foreign policy problems.

• Improving veteran benefits, such as healthcare and disability.

• Discussion of new congressional legislation for veterans and ways to send input to those on Capitol Hill who draft them.

• New cash payments to homeless veterans and who should or should not receive them. Information on eligibility will be available.

Jacksonville is the first stop for the town hall, with others planned this year, Vets4Vets said.
