Jacoby Brissett, Myles Garrett, Nick Chubb not expected to play in Browns preseason opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. − Jacoby Brissett is among 10 players who won't play in the Browns' preseason opener in Jacksonville on Friday despite being healthy.

Brissett is expected to start at quarterback during Deshaun Watson's suspension. Watson, who is still awaiting a verdict in the NFL's appeal of his six-game suspension, started against the Jaguars, his first appearance in a game since Jan. 3, 2021, while he was with the Houston Texans.

A large number of the Browns' biggest-name players also sat out Friday's game. That includes receiver Amari Cooper, linebacker Anthony Walker Jr., cornerback Greg Newsome, running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, safety John Johnson III, guard Joel Bitonio and defensive ends Jadaveon Clowney and Myles Garrett.

Four Browns players were not expected to play due to injury: receiver Michael Woods II (hamstring), cornerbacks Denzel Ward (foot) and Shaun Jolly (groin) and defensive tackle Sheldon Day (back). Ward and Day have missed all of training camp.
