Southside Christian quarterback Ja'Corey Martin rushed for five touchdowns and passed for another as the Sabres defeated Lamar, 49-7, in the Class A Upper State Championship Friday night in Donald R. Poole Stadium at Lamar.
The Sabres (13-0) have won 22 straight games and will face Bamberg-Ehrhardt (13-0) for the state championship at noon Saturday at Benedict College in Columbia. Southside Christian will take aim at its second straight title after defeating Lake View, 46-6, last season.
It didn't take long for the Sabres to get rolling, and it all started with the defense. Jayvion Sherman intercepted a pass on Lamar's first series, setting up the Sabres' offense up deep in the Silver Foxes' (9-4) territory. Martin then passed to Janko Fredricks for a 20-yard touchdown to give the Sabres the lead just one minute into the game.
Martin then scored on runs of 27, 15 and 1 yards to give Southside Christian a 28-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter. He added a pair of touchdowns (4,1 yards) in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 42-0 at the half.
Martin carried the ball seven times for 68 yards leading to his five touchdowns. He had 102 yards passing on four completions.
The Sabres came out of the break with an 11-yard touchdown run by Sherman to cap their scoring. Pat Anderson put Lamar on the scoreboard midway through the final period with a 53-yard run.
Fredricks had three catches for 72 yards for Southside Christian, while Anderson finished with 66 yards on 14 carries to lead the Silver Foxes.
