Jacquemus Has Mastered the Springtime Shirt

Tyler Watamanuk

Last summer, the French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus sent his forthcoming spring-summer collection down a bright pink runway surrounded by a dreamlike field of lavender. You'd be hard-pressed to find a fashion show or a designer, for that matter, that better embodies the sunny style of southern France—and of summer wardrobes anywhere—than Jacquemus. The man knows a thing or two about clothes you want to wear from the start of spring until the dead-end of summer. One standout of his, besides the infamous tiny "it" bag, is his unique take on the floral shirt. Jacquemus has managed to elevate the warm-weather staple from tropical kitsch into artful fashion.

First, the fit and fabric have been reimagined and recharged for today's times. (No cheap polyester here!) A sturdy cotton-poplin accentuates the flowy, boxy shape for a garment that is loose on purpose, but not oversized to dad-on-vacation levels. It's just the right degree of breezy you want on a hot day. As for the prints, they look more like something you'd see in MoMA than 1980s-era curtains you might find in a Florida motel. One of my favorites is printed with large watercolor-style flowers in shades of soft blue; another features Picasso-esque flowers with sketchy lines and bold colors; a third is covered in swirling brush-stroked artichokes. There is even a lime green shirt with an embroidered floral design that feels perfectly left-of-center.

As the weather finally starts to warm up, it slowly-but-officially becomes the season for floral prints. (Not even self-isolation can stop that.) Sure, you may not be able to lounge poolside, but a bold and artful shirt from Jacquemus is a surefire way to brighten any day spent at home. It might not be quite as relaxing or sun-soaked as lying at the beach, but your shirt will be looking great, and that counts for something.
