DOVER ‒ The guest speaker for Youth Mental Health Night on March 21 will be Jade Gordon, daughter of author Jon Gordon. She will present a workshop based on his bestselling book, "The Power of Positive Leadership."

The event will start with a health fair at 5:30 p.m. at Dover High School, 520 North Walnut St. Gordon will speak for about an hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.

The evening is presented by the Tuscarawas County Counselors Association.

Lindsey Tidrick, president of the association, said the message about leadership is important because today's youth may have not have as much experience practicing direct communication skills as past generations.

"I think it's hard for them to sometimes speak up and find their voice to be a leader. Making good choices and being a positive role model are very important, but they're definitely hard things to do right now," said Tidrick, a counselor for the Strasburg Franklin School District.

She said Gordon will break down the key traits of leadership and give students examples and tools to be a positive leader.

Gordon is expected to tell the audience how to:

  • Become better at leading others.

  • Have a purpose and vision.

  • Overcome adversity.

  • Turn challenges into opportunities.

  • Transform negativity.

  • Understand commitment, connection, communication and care.

  • Lead from the inside out.

"We talk a lot in society about how we are preparing the youth for the future," Tidrick said. "Leading with optimism and positive thinking are the key traits to being a good leader, and Jade will cover that with our students during the day and also speak to parents and the community about it in the evening."
