Jaguars plan to sign former Jets QB Tim Tebow as a tight end

Tebow Time is almost back.

The Jaguars plan to sign Tim Tebow to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Tebow wouldn’t join them as a quarterback, though. Rather, he worked out for the team before the 2021 NFL draft as a tight end. The deal would reunite Tebow with Urban Meyer, his college coach at Florida.

The 33-year-old Tebow hasn’t played in an NFL regular season game since 2012 when he was a member of the Jets. New York traded a fourth- and a sixth-round pick to the Broncos for Tebow and a seventh-round pick before that season. Tebow only saw action in 12 games with two starts and finished with just six completions for 39 yards and 102 rushing yards on 32 attempts. The Jets cut Tebow after the season.

Tebow was the 25th overall pick by the Broncos in 2010, where he played for two seasons before joining the Jets. He signed with the Patriots after the Jets cut him in 2013 and then the Eagles in 2015, but he only played in a few preseason games and didn’t make either team’s final roster.

Tebow spent a few seasons as a college football analyst for ESPN and returned to professional sports in 2016 when he signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. Tebow got as far as Triple-A before officially retiring from baseball in February.

Rumors emerged before the 2021 draft that Tebow worked out for the Jaguars as a tight end, the position many thought Tebow should switch to during his first stint in the league a decade ago. Now those rumors have been validated, although an official signing isn’t expected for at least another week.

How will Tebow fare as a tight end? It’s hard to say given his lone NFL target hit him in the back of the head when he played for the Jets.

If Tebow makes the roster, he could face the Jets at some point this season. New York is scheduled to play Jacksonville at home.
