Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence earns AFC Offensive Player of the Week honor after Week 3 performance

On Wednesday, the NFL announced Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award for his performance against the Los Angeles Chargers in the team's Week 3 matchup on the West Coast.

Lawrence completed 28 of 39 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns against the Chargers, leading the team to a 2-1 record. The second-year QB is the first Jaguars player to win the AFC Offensive Player of the Week honor since quarterback David Garrard did so in 2010.

Garrard and the Jaguars defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8 of that season. The since-retired Jaguars QB completed 17 out of 21 of his passes for 260 yards and four touchdowns against the Cowboys.

Lawrence, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, threw three touchdowns to three different players, including Marvin Jones Jr., Zay Jones and Christian Kirk.

Through three games, Lawrence has completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 772 yards and six touchdowns. He's thrown a touchdown pass in all three games this season, including two or more in the past two games of the year. His progress is palpable.

Speaking with the media Wednesday, Lawrence was humble about receiving the recognition, stating that it says more about the organization, team, staff and players surrounding him. He, along with the rest of his teammates, are being put in positions to be successful.

“Everyone just does their job, and it’s been a lot of fun," said Lawrence. "Obviously, I’m happy with the way I played, but there’s still a lot of growth that still needs to happen, and I know there’s things I can do better, there’s things that this offense can do better, so we’re going to focus on the things we need to improve on.

"Monday morning comes, you look at the things that you did well, and there are certain goals that we’ve been hitting the last couple weeks that we’re proud of, but as an offense, we’re looking at all the things we can do better.”

Pederson shared the same sentiments that Lawrence did, but noted that the QB is progressing, something the team will likely hope to continue as the season stretches on.

“It just shows that he is progressing, number one. I think the guys around him are playing extremely well, the offensive line and really everybody on offense," Pederson said when asked about Lawrence's AFC Offensive POTW honor Wednesday.

The Jaguars' offensive line has played at an elite level over the past two games, particularly in the passing game. Lawrence hasn't been sacked since Week 1, and he rarely has been pressured.

Lawrence's receiving options have also joined in on the fun. Zay Jones, the team's receptions leader, caught 11 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers last week. Christian Kirk, the team's high-priced free agent this spring, has caught 18 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns.

Kirk ranks eighth in the NFL in receiving yards behind the likes of Tyreek Hill, A.J. Brown, Cooper Kupp, Jaylen Waddle, Stefon Diggs, Courtland Sutton and Chris Olave.

Jaguars running back James Robinson has also become a major contributor, leading the team in rushing yards with 230 yards in three games. That includes a 100-yard game on Sunday and a 50-yard TD run (career-long TD).

"It’s part of the progression of our offense and the steps that we need to to be a great offense in this league. We’re not there yet, but it’s a step in the right direction. He understands, too, that he can’t get that type of recognition without the guys around him.”

Jaguars staying put through looming Hurricane Ian

Though much of TIAA Bank Field will be closed down over the next couple of days, Jaguars players and coaches will remain in the building while Hurricane Ian is expected to make its way across the state and impact the Jacksonville area on Thursday and Friday.

Pederson indicated Wednesday that as of right now, things are "favorable" for Jacksonville for Friday and Saturday. The team is expected to fly to Philly to take on the Eagles on Saturday.

Ultimately, the team decided that staying was in the best interest of not only the team but the families that would remain in Jacksonville if they were to relocate.

“If we leave, the families are still here kind of fending for themselves, and as husbands and dads, we want to make sure they’re well taken care of, and the organization can help take care of the families," Pederson said.

If the storm was going to make a direct hit on Jacksonville, things would be different, the team might consider leaving, Pederson indicated. "But I think other than some wind and some rain, I think Friday we’re going to be okay, and just stay here.”
