About the Jaguars

  • The Jags can reach the playoffs for the first time since 2017 and earn a home playoff game with a victory over the Titans. If that happens, it would be the first sweep of the season series since 2005.

  • Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence needs 99 yards to become the third quarterback in franchise history to surpass 4,000 yards, joining Mark Brunell and Blake Bortles. He also needs 12 completions to break Bortles' single-season record and if he completes at least 50 percent of his passes, he will break David Garrard's record of 64.5 completion percentage.

  • The Jaguars' defense is coming off the best two-game performance in terms of allowing the fewest points with six against the Jets and Texans. The least points the Jaguars have allowed in three consecutive games was 16 in 1999, beating Pittsburgh 17-3, the New York Jets 16-6 and Cleveland 24-7.

About the Titans

  • Tennessee is battered, with a league-high 34 players making appearances on the injured reserve list. The depth chart for the Titans last game against Dallas had only 11 starters who were in the opening-day lineup.

  • Titans running back Derrick Henry, who had 119 yards in the first half against the Jaguars on Dec. 11 (finishing with 121), gained 345 yards and scored five touchdowns in his last two games in Jacksonville, near his hometown of Yulee. He had never gained more than 100 yards in Jacksonville in four prior games against the Jags. He has gained 551 yards and scored seven touchdowns at TIAA Bank Field.

  • The Titans have dropped to 25th overall in the NFL in total defense and are last against the pass. During their current five-game losing streak, Tennessee has allowed 30.8 points per game.

Key Matchup

Jaguars LB Foye Oluokun vs. Titan RB Derrick Henry

It's hard to remember a Jaguars-Titans game that didn't involve, as a central focus, the issue of stopping Derrick Henry. He's gained 1,264 yards and scored 15 touchdowns against the Jaguars in 12 career games, with five 100-yard games and two 200-yard games.

Jaguars linebackers Foye Oluokun (23) and Devin Lloys (33) will be charged in trying to hold down Titans running back Derrick Henry.
Jaguars linebackers Foye Oluokun (23) and Devin Lloys (33) will be charged in trying to hold down Titans running back Derrick Henry.

Oluokun is likely to finish first in the NFL in tackles for the second season in a row and had 14 tackles, 10 solos, in the Jaguars victory over the Titans last month. But the key reason the Jags held Henry to 2 yards on three carries in the second half was taking 33-14 lead in the third quarter, forcing the Titans to throw.

Oluokun and the rest of the Jags defense need to do a better job against Henry than in the first half in Nashville, when he had 119 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown run.
