Jaime Moreno's four-year run as head coach and stabilizing presence for the Oxnard High football team has ended.

Principal Richard Urias announced in an email to Oxnard staff on Tuesday that the school "will be looking for a new head football coach for the 2023 season."

No details were given. Urias told The Star later that the change was a "private personnel matter."

Moreno, when contacted, said he preferred not to comment and expressed his "love" for the Oxnard kids.

"I am appreciative of Mr. Moreno's contribution to our program," Urias said. "We believe all the pieces for success exist at Oxnard High and we look forward to the future success of our program."

The principal said the school will launch its search for the next head football coach in January and plans to hire its top choice by February.

Moreno took over as head coach at a tumultuous time for the Oxnard football program. Celebrated head coach Jon Mack unexpectedly departed the program in January 2019, just two months after coaching the Yellowjackets to their first Southern Section final in 90 years.

Oxnard lost in the CIF-SS Division 6 championship game and finished with an 11-3 record. Mack had been with the program four years.

Moreno, an assistant coach then serving as the interim athletic director, was selected as head football coach in March 2019. He kept the Yellowjackets coaching staff virtually intact and lent steady leadership.

The Yellowjackets finished 10-2 in Moreno's first season in 2019 and advanced to the CIF-SS quarterfinals. The program also won its sixth consecutive league title.

Moreno also navigated the program through the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, with Oxnard finishing 3-2 in a shortened spring season.

His four-year record is 21-16, including a 5-5 finish this fall.
