Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-Yonkers, won his second term Tuesday night, beating back a challenge from Dr. Miriam Levitt Flisser, the former mayor of Scarsdale.

The Associated Press projected Bowman's victory; he held 57.4% of the vote with 624 of 703 voting districts reporting results.

Bowman, a former middle school principal, ran on his Congressional record in favor of gun safety, abortion rights and support for the Inflation Reduction Act, which allows the federal government to negotiate the prices of some drugs for Americans in the federal Medicare program and provided huge investments to combat climate change.

The 16th Congressional District includes Westchester County south of I-287 and a section of north-central Bronx.

Bowman also promoted his Green New Deal for Public Schools Act, which would invest $1.4 trillion over 10 years in public schools and infrastructure to address climate change.

Flisser, a Republican who served as the school physician for several Westchester public and private schools, said Americans need to respect the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, which overturned Roe v. Wade on abortion rights, and returned those decisions to the states.

She opposes federal measures to restrict the ownership of guns, saying enforcement of our nation’s current laws would help stem the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S. She wants those accused of crimes to be jailed after they are apprehended, and before charges are adjudicated in court.

Bowman defeated Flisser in a low-key political campaign in which the challenger had spent just $1,300 by Sept. 30, according to federal campaign finance reports.

Bowman, meanwhile, spent $1.8 million, most of which was used in his decisive victory in the August Democratic primary over Westchester County legislators Vedat Gashi, D-Yorktown, and Catherine Parker, D-Rye.
