Jamahl Mosley explains why Franz Wagner will start Magic opener

Orlando Magic rookie Franz Wagner will start in the regular-season opener on Wednesday versus the San Antonio Spurs, head coach Jamahl Mosley said prior to the contest.

Wagner averaged 4.5 points, 1.8 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in four games with the Magic. He finished off his run by totaling 17 points and four rebounds over his last two contests, seemingly building up positive momentum heading into the regular season.

He played a key role with the Magic in defeating the Boston Celtics in their preseason finale. Wagner was commended for the effort and energy he brought while also defending at a high level, which are some of the reasons why Mosley wants him in the starting lineup.

We have talked about Franz having such a high basketball IQ, his ability to read defenses, as well as defend multiple positions. That is a definite reason why he is in the starting lineup tonight, just having versatile guys out there and very good decision makers.

The eighth overall pick showed progression throughout the preseason, improving each time he stepped onto the court. He proved that he can help impact games, and the Magic will certainly welcome that sort of production to the team.
