Jamala wrote the song to mourn the death of a close friend from Crimea, Seyran Kadyrov, who served in the Crimean Special Forces of the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate. Kadyrov was killed in action near Bakhmut in January 2023. “My Brother” is a tribute to all the brothers and sisters who have lost their lives in the war and were unable to hear the voices of their familes one last time.

"My memories of him were so bright that somehow I couldn't cry until I wrote this song," Jamala admitted, sharing what helped her deal with her emotions as the memories and tears poured out.

"In this time of war, unfortunately, we have a lot of similar stories. The least we can do for the people we loved and who died protecting us is to remember, to remember, to not to be afraid to love them, to love the memories of them, to remember their jokes, their musical tastes, to quote them. It helped me, maybe it will help you? Write them a letter."

Jamala shot the video for her song in her apartment, inviting fans into her memories and into her home. One key detail in the video is a cell phone – a symbol of connection and remembrance.

"Jamala does not allow us to remain indifferent. My heart is crying,” wrote one listener.

"Time does not heal, but we must let go. God help Ukrainian families to survive such grief. Thank you for the song and the wonderful performance," wrote another.
