Some of the top track and field athletes in the state lead way at Fort LeBoeuf Invitational

WATERFORD — North East’s Jamari Curlett and Harbor Creek’s Nick Krahe were listed among the PIAA’s best track and field athletes in their specialties on April 4-5.

Pa.milesplit.com declared Curlett’s times of 11.06 seconds in the 100 meters and 23.14 in the 200 as the state’s fastest for Class 2A boys.

Krahe, over that same span, had the state’s best attempt in the shot put (53 feet, 3 inches) for small-school males.

Each took pride in their achievements when they spoke of them during Saturday’s Fort LeBoeuf Invitational. The Bison hosted the first of three straight Erie County meets scheduled over that same number of weekends.

Each, though, also had no issue that their achievements only held up as state bests for roughly 48 hours.

Curlett and Krahe each have better results in mind for those same events by the end of this season.

“(North East’s) school record (in the 100) is 10.8,” Curlett said. “I think I can get at least a 10.9. For the 200, I think at least 22.4.”

Curlett, by the small margin of recorded time, won Saturday’s boys 100 final at Carm Bonito Field. The junior, despite a strained hamstring, finished first at 11.18 to the 11.19 of Meadville junior Nicholas Williams.

Curlett was clocked at 22.85 in Saturday’s 200 final. He was second to the 22.45 time posted by Reynolds’ Haydin McLaughlin.

“I don’t know what to say about my (times) right now,” Curlett said. “I’m just blessed.”

Krahe conquers two throwing events

Unlike Curlett, Krahe experienced no such snug first-and-second-place results by the end of his throwing events.

The Harbor Creek senior, a West Virginia football recruit, made others in the boys shot put and discus events chase him when he recorded his winning distances early in each.

Krahe’s first attempt of 55 feet, 8 inches nearly exceeded LeBoeuf's dirt layout for the shot put. No opponent came close to threatening that distance, with Seneca’s Dylan Ellenberger second at 47-6½.

“I felt really good about that one,” Krahe said, “but I know there’s more of those to come. It was cool having (that state-best distance), but I know I’m always competing with myself. I just got to keep practicing every day.”

Krahe experienced a larger margin of victory in the discus. His best toss landed at 149-4 to the 137-3 for Meadville’s Justice Esser.

Krahe will compete in the Harbor Creek Invitational for the final time when the Huskies host their annual meet Saturday.

Bobcats star sweeps hurdles

One of Seneca's greatest all-around athletes began his final varsity season Saturday.

Ryan Miller swept the meet's boys 110 and 300 hurdles with respective gold medal times of 15.94 and 41.26.

Besides track, Miller also has been Seneca’s best football player and wrestler in recent seasons. Although he’ll graduate this June, local fans will still have multiple chances to watch him compete when he enrolls at Mercyhurst this fall and plays for the Lakers’ football team.

“It’s great I’ll be staying local,” Miller said. “My mom and dad and all my aunts and uncles are all here at this track meet. It’s great to know they’ll also be there to support me when I play football.”

Bison runner with breakthrough effort

Miller’s last appearance in LeBoeuf’s meet doubled as the first for Alena Urbanowicz. The freshman for the Bison swept the girls sprint finals.

Urbanowicz was first in the 100 at 13.10 and in the 200 at 26.64.

“I feel pretty great because I wasn’t expecting to do this well,” she said. “I had a mix of good-nervous and bad-nervous (Saturday), but when I got up to the starting line I just zoned in and got right to it.”

Saturday’s title time in the 100 left Urbanowicz confident she can crack the 13-second mark. Sooner rather than later.

Urbanowicz also anchored LeBoeuf’s victory in the meet’s 400 relay final. Mackenzie Marsh, Ella McGowan, Emily Samluk joined her for their winning time of 50.75.

Trojans top team standings

McDowell, which will host its meet April 29, swept Saturday's first-place team trophies.

McDowell’s girls totaled 122½ points to LeBoeuf’s 96. The Trojans won even though they left Waterford with only two individual titlists.

Hayden and Hannah Palmer went one-two in the 1,600 final. Hayden Palmer completed her four laps in 5:31.85.

Mary Stravinsky won one of the Trojans’ signature events, the pole vault. She cleared the bar at 9-6 on her best attempt. The boys' pole vault winner was Erie High's Bradon Schneider, who, according to Pa.milesplit.com, equaled the best vault in the state this season at 15-7.

Success in the distance races is largely why McDowell's boys finished with 121 points. Seneca was second with 104½.

The Trojans’ Christian Mattern won the individual 1,600 at 4:34.80, while teammate Kamden Kramer did the same in the 3,200 at 9:49.05. They also ran the first and fourth legs of the 3,200 relay that McDowell won in 8:19.29.

Mattern and Kramer bracketed Nicolin Pierce and Brady Heeter for that result.

The Trojans’ other victories were for the meet’s 400 relay (44.01) and Christian Santiago in the javelin (163-11).
