James Borrego says Hornets need LaMelo Ball to rebound to be successful
Of the many skills that LaMelo Ball has shown during his brief NBA career, perhaps the most surprising has been his high-level rebounding. Not only has Ball excelled as a rebounder for a guard this season, he leads all rookies in rebounding.
His rebounding has opened up many possibilities for the Hornets in terms of lineups, including using the 3-guard lineup that has been particularly effective this season. But more than just a surprise or luxury, head coach James Borrego said Ball’s rebounding is an important factor in the team’s success.
“We need him to rebound,” Borrego said. “When he rebounds the ball, we’re much better offensively and we’re better defensively. He’s got the size to do it, the ability to do it so that’s a big part. We need him to rebound to be a successful team.”
Interestingly, the stats back up Borrego’s statement. In wins this season, Ball is averaging 7.1 rebounds versus just 5.2 rebounds per game in losses. When Ball grabs at least seven rebounds, the Hornets are 8-5. When he grabs fewer than seven rebounds, the Hornets are just 6-11. Even more, the Hornets are 6-1 in games Ball grabs eight rebounds or more.
Ball being a rebounder allows the offense to play at an even quicker tempo and puts more pressure on the defense. Given the Hornets are fifth in the league in points per possession in transition at 1.163, per Synergy, the extra transition possessions typically lead to positive results.
