Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 spoilers follow.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has spoken about the trilogy's final scene featuring Rocket.

Vol 3 delivers an emotional conclusion by honouring its characters and their individual and collective journeys, without tragedy striking in the form of sudden deaths.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Gunn delved into the final and "joyful" shot of Rocket smiling. The final scenes confirm Rocket is at the head of a new gang of Guardians, who may or may not pop up in future movies.

"He's found himself," said Gunn. "He's with his people, and he knows who he is. It's that joy. And I think we're ending on an unabashedly joyful note.

"That moment of fun celebration that we saw at the beginning of the first two movies, we actually save for the ending of the movie when we've earned it."

Gunn also recently touched upon an emotional moment for Rocket as the new movie explored his backstory, revealing he was experimented on as a baby and his fellow test subjects were killed as they tried to escape, so he now has an affinity for prosthetic limbs as they remind him of that past.
