James Gunn has offered an update on Margot Robbie's future as Harley Quinn.

Following Robbie's recent comments about the unlikelihood of her returning as the iconic DC character, The Suicide Squad director has revealed that he would love for the actress to continue in the role.

In response to a fan's question over Harley Quinn's future, Gunn shared on Threads that he'd love to work with the Barbie star again — in any capacity.

"I haven't talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I'd love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else," he wrote.

"There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in [director] Todd [Phillips]'s movie [where she'll be played by Lady Gaga] or the animated show/s)."

Gunn's admission comes after Robbie revealed that she always hoped Harley Quinn could be played by another actress.

"I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her," she said in a recent interview with Variety.

"Harley's so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else's hands, and it's like, 'What are they going to do with her?' The options are endless."

In other DC news, Gunn recently revealed that Peacemaker's second season is now "over halfway written", following confirmation that new episodes were in the process of being fleshed out.

The show focuses on John Cena's titular character after the conclusion of The Suicide Squad. Following a successful debut two years ago, it was quickly renewed for a second season.

It's a busy time for Gunn, who is also working on the highly-anticipated Superman: Legacy movie — which stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane.

The Suicide Squad is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. Peacemaker season 1 is streaming on Max in the US and airs on Sky and NOW in the UK. Superman: Legacy premieres in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
