James Gunn wasn't told about Thor teaming up with Guardians of the Galaxy

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a meticulously planned and well-oiled machine, with things set up in one film and designed to bear fruit years later in a completely different character's film.
While you might imagine that directors will be kept in the loop of what the other films are doing, it turns out that's not always the case, as James Gunn only learned that Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame... while watching Avengers: Endgame.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn admitted he was initially worried about this development because his film had no place for the hugely-powerful Avenger.

"They chose to have that ending in editing. And I didn't think it was gonna be in there," he said.
"Endgame came out right after I decided to do Guardians again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in Endgame, and then it came out and then I was like, 'What the f**k am I gonna do?'
"That’s when Kevin [Feige] told me Taika [Waititi]'s gonna do Thor [Love and Thunder], and we'll have the Guardians in it. I said, 'Thank God!'… To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie.

"Taika took a bullet for me. Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there's no Thor."
In the end, the Guardians only very briefly featured in Thor's latest outing, but he still got an action sequence and some comedy bits with them.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 arrives in cinemas on May 5, 2023.
