James Harden acknowledges he ‘fell short’ in farewell message to Houston

Over eight seasons with the Houston Rockets, James Harden was eight-for-eight in All-Star appearances, a three-time scoring champion, and an MVP, among countless accolades. But he was never able to lead the team to the peak of NBA success with a championship.
There are numerous reasons for that, of course. But as the team’s leader and best player, it seems Harden is putting some of the blame on himself as he transitions to his new team, the Brooklyn Nets.
In an extended post-trade farewell message on Instagram, here’s what Harden wrote regarding his Houston years:
What can I write? What words can convey all the ways I feel. Houston, you welcomed me with no guarantees. Took a leap of faith, and it changed my life and the lives of my family, forever. This organization, this city has given me everything I could ask for and more. Before the scoring titles, long before MVP, you believed. For that I am forever indebted.
The city opened its arms and welcomed me and my family as one of its own, and for that I am forever indebted. I gave my mind, body, and soul in hopes of bringing the glory to the city. I fell short, and for that, I am forever indebted. It’s far from a goodbye, as I pay all my debts. TMC H Town!
The Instagram post includes an edited mix of video highlights to celebrate Harden’s long tenure with the Rockets. Over those eight full seasons, Houston was the only NBA team to never miss the playoffs.
“It’s far from a goodbye, as I pay all my debts,” concluded Harden, in an indication that he wants to continue to stay involved with the city.
Harden is expected to make his Brooklyn debut on Saturday.
