Jamestown Tarnos go back-to-back with 7-3 win over Enderlin

Aug. 15—JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown Tarnos have won back-to-back North Dakota State Amateur Baseball Class AA titles. The Tarnos beat the Enderlin Indies 7-3 behind lackluster Indies defense on Sunday, Aug. 14, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Tarnos showed off their patience forcing Indies starter Derek Lyons to throw 111 pitches while giving up two earned runs and walking two in six innings of work. In total, the Indies had five errors, while the Tarnos had one.

On the other side, former Jimmies hurler Noah Soltero worked in and out of trouble multiple times throwing 97 pitches while giving up six hits, two earned runs, striking out seven and walking three in a complete game. All of the six hits that Soltero gave up were to four Indies hitters.

Soltero said his strategy was to throw all of his pitches and keep the hitters off balance.

"Filling the zone with a fastball," Soltero said. "If they hit the fastball, go to a second pitch but fill the zone."

The Indies opened the scoring in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly and a single to make it 2-0.

The Tarnos had to fight back for the second consecutive game as they tied the game in the top of the fourth and took the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a Jake Stillwell bloop single through the left side to score Danny Fischer from second and stretch the lead to 3-2. The next hitter was JB Morales who hit a ball through the left side to score Stillwell and advanced to second on an error to stretch the Tarnos lead out to 4-2.

The Tarnos lead would be cut to 5-3 thanks to a Zach Michaelson solo homer before the Tarnos added on in the top of the seventh with a Morales RBI single to make it 6-3 before he scurried home on a wild pitch later in the game to make it 7-3.

"I was just looking for a breaking pitch because I know this pitcher throws a lot of change-ups and curves," Morales said. "He threw me a fastball and I knew the next pitch was coming with a breaking pitch. He threw me a breaking pitch and I got a hit. That's it."

Soltero said he was just happy with the win and didn't care about his individual stats.

"I don't care about the win," Soltero said. "I don't care about the stats. I could've given up 40 runs but if our offense wins. I'm all about the team. Who cares? We won."
