Jan. 20 Amarillo COVID-19 report: Active cases rise above 10,000 with 982 new, 1 new death

The Amarillo Public Health Department reported an increase of 982 new COVID-19 cases and one additional death in Thursday's COVID-19 report card.

That brings the total number of cases in Potter and Randall counties to 65,002 and the total number of deaths to 1,043 since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

Of the total, 10,233 cases were reported as active in Thursday's report card, a net increase of 837 active cases.

There have been 53,726 reported COVID-19 recoveries, an increase of 144 recoveries from Wednesday.

Trauma Service Area A, which includes Potter and Randall counties as well as the majority of the Texas Panhandle, is recording a 25.34% COVID-19 hospitalization rate as of Wednesday.

Potter County saw an increase of 430 COVID-19 cases, bringing the county's total to 31,661 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total, 4,867 are active, an increase of 360 net active cases from Wednesday. There have been 26,163 recoveries and 631 deaths related to the virus, according to Thursday's report card.

Randall County saw an increase of 552 COVID-19 cases, bringing the county's total to 33,341 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total, 5,366 are active, an increase of 477 net active cases from Wednesday. There have been 27,563 recoveries and 412 deaths related to the virus, according to Thursday's report card.

As reported in Thursday's COVID-19 update, 516,623 COVID-19 tests have been conducted since the start of the pandemic, with 46 tests pending.

Where to get the COVID-19 vaccine, booster

The Amarillo Health Department is administering boosters for the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.

The city offers the Moderna vaccine for individuals 18 and older, as well as doses of the Pfizer vaccine for those between the ages of 5 and 17.

Immunizations are available at Amarillo Public Health, 850 Martin Road, during the following hours:

• Monday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Thursdays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Amarillo Public Health Department has received a shipment of the monoclonal antibody infusion medication Sotrovimab, the city announced last week.

The department has begun scheduling patients for treatment beginning with those who are already on the referral list and moving on to new patients as monoclonal antibody supplies last.

As previously reported, the department gave out all doses of the COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies allocated after treating more than 5,000 patients at the Amarillo Regional Infusion Center, 808 S. Johnson. Treatments at the clinic resumed with the next shipment of the COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
