Jan. 6 committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson contracts COVID but Thursday’s prime-time hearing will continue

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) chairman of the House Jan. 6 committee, has contracted COVID-19, but the panel will still hold its prime-time hearing on Thursday, according to a spokesman for the congressional committee.

“I tested positive... and experiencing mild symptoms,” Thompson said in a statement on Tuesday. “Gratefully, I am fully vaccinated and boosted. I am continuing to follow CDC guidelines and will be isolating for the next several days.”

It was not immediately clear if Thompson would be able to participate remotely in the eighth hearing, which will focus on former President Donald Trump’s actions as the mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol in a failed effort to keep him in power.

But the panel plans to go ahead with the hearing regardless of whether or not Thomson cannot attend, committee spokesman Tim Mulvey said.

Matthew Pottinger, former deputy national security adviser, and Sarah Matthews, a former press aide, are expected to testify, according to sources close to the panel.

Both Pottinger and Matthews resigned immediately after the pro-Trump attack that was designed to block Congress from certifying President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

The panel is also likely to reveal extensive testimony from former White House counsel Pat Cipollone, who met with Trump several times as the riot unfolded and Trump’s supporters hunted down perceived enemies including former Vice President Mike Pence.

The panel has vowed to give the American public a “minute by minute” account of what it calls Trump’s “dereliction of duty” in the face of the worst attack on American democracy since the Civil War.

“We have filled in the blanks,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), who will help lead Thursday’s session, said Sunday. “This is going to open people’s eyes in a big way.”

Thursday’s hearing will be the first in the prime-time slot since the June 9 debut that was viewed by an estimated 20 million people.
