Jan 6 hearing – live: Secret Service exploring ‘new allegations’ Trump attacked officer in limo

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’s top aide Cassidy Hutchinson has testified before the committee investigating the 6 January attacks at the Capitol.

Her remarks before the congressional inquiry are perhaps the most damning yet before the panel, and paint a picture of an erratic and violent Donald Trump in the events surrounding the riot at the Capitol.

She told the committee that the president said, “I don’t f***ing care that they have weapons,” when he was warned his supporters were heavily armed in the moments before he encouraged them to march on the Capitol.

Once the president finished speaking to throngs of supporters on January 6, he was reportedly “irate” his security staff didn’t want him to make an unplanned visit to the Capitol, so much so he tried to grab the wheel of the presidential limousine and allegedly attacked a Secret Service agent.

Eventually, according to Ms Hutchinson’s testimony, as rioters breached the Capitol, the president nonchalantly said vice-president Mike Pence “deserves” to have extremists chanting that he should be hung for refusing to overturn the 2020 election.

The former president attacked the testimony, claiming he barely knew the “sick” Ms Hutchinson.

Cheney shares article arguing case for prosecuting Trump is getting stronger

07:17 , Shweta Sharma

Republican representative Liz Cheney, a member of the House select committee investigating the last year’s 6 January attack at the Capitol, retweeted an article that argued that the case to prosecute the former president is getting stronger after the bombshell hearing.

The article, titled “The Case for Prosecuting Donald Trump Just Got Much Stronger” from The Dispatch by David French concluded that Mr Trump may not face criminal charges for his actions but the latest testimonies have helped link the former president to violent actions in the run up to Capitol riots.

Even for Trump, this is a pretty wild story

07:15 , Josh Marcus

An “irate” Doanld Trump grabbed the steering wheel of his limousine and attacked a Secret Service agent when he was told he was not being taken to the US Capitol, the January 6 committee has been told in its most stunning hearing yet.

In cool, measured tones, that were in stark contrast to the incidents she was describing, former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson said she was told Mr Trump wanted to go to the Capitol so badly he attempted to grab the steering wheel of “The Beast” after being told he was going back to the White House instead.

He also grabbed at the “clavicle” of a Secert Serice agent, Ms Hutchinson testified.

Tony Ornato, then-White House deputy chief of staff, told Ms Hutchinson that Robert Engel, the Secret Service agent in charge on January 6 2021, had repeatedly told Mr Trump on their way back to the White House after his rally speech that it was not safe to go to the Capitol.

Andrew Buncombe has the details.

Watch moment when aide says Trump ‘threw his lunch against wall’

06:47 , Shweta Sharma

In one of the gripping scenes Cassidy Hutchinson recalled, she Mr Trump threw his lunch — including the plate it had been served on — against the wall of his private dining room. It left behind a smear of ketchup on the wall.

She said it was in reaction to former attorney general William Barr’s declaration that the presidential election had not been tainted by fraud.

The Trump pardon wish list got even longer today

Mark Meadows and Rudy Giuliani requested pardons after January 6, witness Cassidy Hutchinson told a hearing hosted by the investigative panel.

They’re the latest in an ever-growing list of Trump inner circle members who sought pardons related to the Capitol riots.

Is Donald Trump trying to tamper with January 6 testimony? It sure seems like someone is.

05:15 , Josh Marcus

The January 6 committee is alarmed that Donald Trump or his allies may be attempting to tamper with the testimony of witnesses participating in the congressional inquiry.

“Most Americans know that attempting to influence witnesses to testify untruthfully presents very serious concerns,” committee vice chairwoman Liz Cheney said on Tuesday.

The committee shared anonymous testimony on Tuesday from January 6 witnesses detailing mob-style threats from unnamed people inside the Trump camp.

“What they said to me is, as long as I continue to be a team player, they know that I’m on the team, I’m doing the right thing, I’m protecting who I need to protect, you know, I’ll continue to stay in good graces in Trump World,” the witness told legislators.

Aide’s explosive testimony that Trump knew of weapons could bolster civil suits

05:05 , Shweta Sharma

A lawyer, who is pressing a lawsuit against Donald Trump and others on behalf of 10 Democratic lawmakers said the damming testimony yesterday could give a major boost to the civil lawsuits against the former president.

“The testimony that came today I think was very powerful confirmation that Trump knew and expected the crowd that was assembled was going to engage in violent action directed at the Capitol with the intention of interfering with the ability to ratify the results of the election,” Joseph Sellers said.

He said the claims that Mr Trump was aware of weapons in the crowd were “highly relevant” to the civil suits and could make him liable for his intention of using violence and threats to force members of Congress to overturn the election.

“This evidence goes a good deal towards confirming that that was the purpose of Trump’s actions,” he added.

John Eastman dismisses bid to block phone records from Jan 6 committee

04:53 , Shweta Sharma

John Eastman, a lawyer linked to Donald Trump’s efforts to reverse the result of the 2020 election, has voluntarily dropped a lawsuit aimed to block the 6 January committee from obtaining his phone records.

In a filing on late Tuesday, Mr Eastman dropped the suit, saying that he has been assured by the committee that it was only to seek his call logs and not the content of the messages.

The House select committee has long said that it does not have the authority to obtain the content of the messages.

It came as he claimed the FBI stopped him outside a restaurant and seized his phone. And a new video appears to show the moment the incident occurred.

ICYMI: Cassidy Hutchinson: Who is ex-Meadows aide testifying before January 6 committee?

04:15 , Josh Marcus

The star witness at Tuesday’s last-minute House January 6 select committee hearing wasn’t a top-level Trump confidante such as ex-White House Counsel Pat Cipollone or former vice president Mike Pence.

Instead, it was Cassidy Hutchinson, who ended the Trump administration as a special assistant to the president assigned as then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’ assistant.

Here’s Andrew Feinberg’s look at the surprising star witness.

Marjorie Taylor Greene and GOP try and fail to poke holes in Cassidy Hutchinson’s shocking Jan 6 testimony

02:00 , Josh Marcus

A handful of Republicans reacted publicly with scorn on Tuesday after Cassidy Hutchinson’s explosive testimony at a surprise hearing of the January 6 committee.

But as the hearing concluded it was clear that many – including Donald Trump himself – were reeling from the latest revelations.

Ms Hutchinson is part of a long list of Republicans whose testimony the Jan 6 committee has decided to highlight; the growing chorus of both Trump-affiliated voices and those of other Republicans from around the country have cut deeply into the counter-narrative pushed by GOP leadership on Capitol Hill calling the hearings a partisan witch hunt.

On Tuesday, she made a series of shocking statements about the conduct of both Donald Trump and Mark Meadows, her immediate boss in the Trump White House where she served as a liaison between the West Wing and Capitol Hill, a position that makes her a familiar face for many Republican lawmakers.

Former Ken Starr deputy says today’s hearing is ‘smoking gun’ in Trump election crimes case

Wednesday 29 June 2022 00:45 , Josh Marcus

A former deputy for Ken Starr, the prosecutor who initiated the investigation that eventually led to Bill Clinton’s impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky scandal, says today’s January 6 hearings are the “smoking gun” that could bring down Donald Trump.

“There isn’t any question this establishes a prima facie case for his criminal culpability on seditious conspiracy charges,” Starr’s former deputy Sol Wisenberg told The New York Times’ Peter Baker.

US Secret Service willing to respond to ‘new allegations’ following testimony that Trump grabbed steering wheel

Wednesday 29 June 2022 00:25 , Josh Marcus

US Secret Service has offered the agency’s cooperation with a House select committee investigating the the attack on the US Capitol after testimony from a former White House aide alleged that Donald Trump lunged at a driver inside a presidential car and demanded that he be taken to the Capitol.

On 28 June, the House select committee investigating the events surrounding the pro-Trump mob’s assault heard from Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

In her testimony, she alleged that Tony Ornato, then-White House deputy chief of staff, relayed to her that Secret Service agent Robert Engel repeatedly told Mr Trump on their way back to the White House following his rally speech that it was not safe to go to the Capitol.

The former president then allegedly told him “I’m the f***ing president” and “take me up to the Capitol now” while reaching for the steering wheel. Mr Engel then allegedly grabbed his arm, and Mr Trump used his other hand to reach towards his neck, according to Ms Hutchinson.

Ex-White House aide shares fateful text from Melania Trump ‘refusing to calm Capitol rioters’

Wednesday 29 June 2022 00:10 , Josh Marcus

A former White House aide has shared a text message allegedly sent by Donald Trump’s wife Melania Trump in which she refused to call on rioters at the US Capitol to stop all violence.

Stephanie Grisham, a longtime Trump loyalist who served as the former president’s press secretary and as Mrs Trump’s chief of staff, resigned within hours of the text exchange on 6 January 2021, when a crowd of Trump supporters stormed the seat of Congress to reverse his election defeat.

“Do you want to tweet that peaceful protests are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness and violence?” Ms Grisham allegedly asked the First Lady.

“No,” came the reply.

Just when you think Trump’s plot to overturn the election can’t get any more shocking, it does

Tuesday 28 June 2022 23:52 , Josh Marcus

Just when you think Donald Trump’s plot to overturn the 2020 election can’t get any more shocking, it does. It’s now clear why the January 6 Committee felt compelled to convene this surprise hearing. To come back from recess with a new hearing and only 24 hours’ notice indicated we were in for something big. But even with all the hype, I’m not sure anyone was prepared for what we heard today. Cassidy Hutchinson, the former Special Assistant to Mark Meadows, just directly implicated Trump in the violence at the Capitol on January 6 and revealed some violence Trump personally unleashed on a Secret Service agent.

In explosive testimony, Cassidy Hutchinson revealed that Trump was briefed on the intelligence reports about potential violence on January 6 and planned his rally anyway. Trump knew that his supporters were armed with guns and body armor and directed them to the Capitol anyway. Trump violently assaulted his own Secret Service agent in an attempt to go to the Capitol himself. Trump said Mike Pence deserved to be hanged. Trump knew that the Capitol was under siege and still sent a tweet attacking Pence. Trump was reluctant to do anything to stop the violence. And after it was all over, Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows sought pardons.

January 6 committee full recap: A wild day of testimony

Tuesday 28 June 2022 22:45 , Josh Marcus

Former president Donald Trump was unconcerned by reports that many of the supporters who attended his January 6 2021 rally at the Ellipse were armed and wanted them to march to the US Capitol nonetheless, a top aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told the House January 6 select committee on Tuesday.

Under questioning by committee vice chairwoman Liz Cheney, former Special Assistant to the President Cassidy Hutchinson revealed a series of bombshells, making clear that Mr Trump and his closest allies knew exactly what was happening on the day of the riot, but were seemingly indifferent to the danger. Ms Hutchinson served as Mr Meadows’ principal assistant during his tenure as the ex-president’s final chief of staff.

The ex-White House aide’s testimony provided the select committee, and the millions watching the televised proceedings, with the most detailed account to date of how Mr Trump and his top aides conducted themselves before and during the pro-Trump riot.

The stunning revelations from Ms Hutchinson included that Mr Trump grabbed the steering wheel of his presidential limousine in an effort to go to the Capitol to join his supporters; Mr Trump’s chief of staff warned that things could get “real, real bad” on January 6; Mr Trump threw his lunch against the wall when his then-attorney general, Bill Barr, knocked down claims of mass voter fraud in the 2020 election; members of Mr Trump’s inner circle sought pardons after the violence; and the select committee has evidence of attempted witness-tampering.

US representative Ruben Gallego is calling for the Department of Justice to indict Donald Trump and his former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, after a bruising day of testimony in the January 6 hearings.

“It’s gut-wrenching to hear how wide and vast this conspiracy was,” the Arizona Democrat said in a video statement on Tuesda..

“We need some action now,” he added. “We need Merrick Garland and the DOJ to show that they’re actually holding people accountable. President Trump as well as Mark Meadows needs to be indicted. There’s a clear violation. There’s a clear intent to stop us from certifying the Electoral College, which is a felony. And they should be treated that way.”

Cassidy Hutchinson has testified. So why won’t other top Trump officials?

Tuesday 28 June 2022 22:15 , Josh Marcus

Mick Mulvaney, the Trump administration’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, argues that if Cassidy Hutchinson can testify before the January 6 committee, so should other top Trump officials like trade adviser Peter Navarro and chief of staff Mark Meadows.

“She would be covered by the exact same levels of ‘executive privilege’ as, say, Peter Navarro or Mark Meadows,” Mr Mulvaney wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. “If she can testify, then so can they.”

Both men, to varying degrees, have claimed their testimony is off limits because of executive privilege.

Mr Navarro has been charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a committee subpoena, to which he has pleaded not guilty, while the Department of Justice declined to hit Mr Meadows with similar charges.

Capitol police officer says new January 6 evidence shows Donald Trump only cares about ‘himself’

Tuesday 28 June 2022 21:24 , Josh Marcus

Daniel Hodges, a US Capitol police officer who was nearly crushed by pro-Trump insurrectionaries, told The Independent after today’s January 6 hearings he’s not shocked by what he heard about the former president.

“Most of what I hear in these hearings isn’t really shocking to me because Donald Trump has long since revealed his character long before he was President,” Mr Hodges said.

“I knew that the only person Trump cares about is himself. He doesn’t really care about officers’ safety or the safety of Congress as long as he gets what he wants,” Mr Hodges added.

During today’s hearings, a former White House aide, Cassidy Hutchinson, testified that Donald Trump didn’t care his supporters were heavily armed before he told them to march on the Capitol, and at one point said he agreed with demonstrators chanting “hang Mike Pence.”

Trump ‘clearly had violence within his sights,’ Jamie Raskin says

Tuesday 28 June 2022 20:34 , Eric Garcia and Gustaf Kilander

After the hearing on Tuesday, panel member Jamie Raskin said Donald Trump “clearly had violence within his sights” on January 6.

“It's extraordinary to hear in such vivid detail that the chief of staff in the White House was aware that there were armed people in that crowd on January the sixth and the president's response to that, according to witness, was searing when he just said, ‘let them all in, take down the mags, take down the machines, let them all in’. There were people with AR-15s,” Mr Raskin said.

“There were people with guns and knives – ‘let them all in’ because they're no threat to him,” the Maryland Democrat added. “So it didn't trouble him, that there were armed people ready for violence in the crowd in the mob that day. And that confirms that this was a president who was willing to do anything to overthrow the presidential election ... and clearly had violence within his sights.”

January 6 committee has ‘very serious concerns’ Trump allies are trying to tamper with testimony

Tuesday 28 June 2022 20:11 , Josh Marcus

The January 6 committee is alarmed that Donald Trump’s allies may be attempting to tamper with the testimony of witnesses participating in the congressional inquiry.

The committee shared anonymous testimony from January 6 witnesses detailing mob-style threats from unnamed Trump allies.

“They reminded me a couple of times that Trump does read transcripts and to just keep that in mind as I proceeded through my depositions and interviews with the committee,” the witness told legislators.

Ms Hutchinson said she remembers “feeling frustrated” and “disappointed” during the riot.

“It felt personal. It was really sad. As an American, I was disgusted. It was unpatriotic. It was unamerican. We were watching the Capitol building get defaced over a lie. Trump says he ‘hardly’ knows his chief of staff’s top aide after she testified that he knew rioters were armed

Tuesday 28 June 2022 19:42 , Alex Woodward

Donald Trump claims to “hardly” know an aide to his former chief of staff after her damning testimony to a House select committee investigating his baseless stolen election narrative and whether he knew a mob of supporters would commit violence at the US Capitol.

The former president wrote on his Truth Social account that he “hardly” knows Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to chief of staff Mark Meadows who also served a special assistant to Mr Trump, “other than I heard very negative things about her (a total phony and ‘leaker’)”.

Ms Hutchinson testified on 28 June that then-president Trump was aware his supporters were armed with guns and knives before they marched on the Capitol ordered staff to remove security devices.

“I don’t f***ing care that they have weapons. They’re not here to hurt me,” he allegedly said. “Take the f***ing mags away. Let my people in. They can march to the Capitol from here. Let the people in.

“Take the f***ing mags away,” said Mr Trump, according to Ms Hutchingson, referring to the metal detectors around the Elipse.

‘He doesn’t want to do anything’: Former White House aide says Trump, Meadows were indifferent to reports of weapons in crowd and violence at Capitol on January 6

Tuesday 28 June 2022 19:36 , Gustaf Kilander

Ms Hutchinson said Mr Meadows was sitting on a couch on his cellphone, scrolling and typing at around 2pm when rioters were moving toward the Capitol.

The witness said she was getting frustrated because she felt like she was watching a “bad car accident”.

“I remember thinking in that moment that Mark needs to snap out of this ... He needs to care,” she told the committee.

According to Ms Hutchinson, White House Counsel Pat Cipollone told Mr Meadows, who was on his phone at the time: “The rioters got to the Capitol, Mark ... we need to see the president now.”

“He doesn’t want to do anything, Pat,” Mr Meadows said, according to the witness.

“Something needs to be done. People are going to die and the blood is going to be on your hands,” Mr Cipollone said.

Referring to the Trump supporters’ chants of “hang Mike Pence”, Ms Hutchinson said Mr Meadows said: “You heard it Pat, [Trump] thinks Mike deserves it”.

Counsel advised against Trump going to Capitol on Jan 6: ‘We’re going to be charged with every crime imaginable’

Tuesday 28 June 2022 19:26 , Gustaf Kilander

The White House counsel advised Donald Trump against going to the Capitol on January 6, according to a witness testifying during the January 6 committee hearing.

“Please make sure we don’t go up to the Capitol. We’re going to be charged with every crime imaginable if that happens,” Pat Cipollone said the morning of January 6, according to Cassidy Hutchinson, who appeared in front of the panel on Tuesday.

“On January 3, Mr Cipollone had approached me knowing that Mark [Meadows] had raised the prospect of going up to the Capitol on January 6,” she told the committee.

“Mr Cipollone and I had a brief conversation. He said to me: ‘We need to make sure that this doesn’t happen. This would be legally a terrible idea for us. We have serious legal concerns if we go up to the Capitol that day’,” Ms Hutchinson said on Tuesday.

“And he then urged me to continue relaying that to Mr Meadows, because it’s my understanding that Mr Cipollone thought that Mr Meadows was indeed pushing this along with the President,” she added.
