Jane Fonda joins TikTok, recreates iconic workout video to promote climate change protest

Jane Fonda is the latest star to join TikTok – and she's showing off some of her old moves for a very specific reason.

In her debut on the popular short-form video platform, the actress, 82, began by re-creating her iconic "Jane Fonda Workout" video from the 1980s.

The real motivation behind the video though? Doing a "workout" for the planet.

She urged viewers to join her in her first virtual Fire Drill Friday rally to protest climate change.

"You know what? There are too many workouts happening right now on television and on computers," she said as the video changes to her in her red coat she's been wearing to her protests. "What I would really like you to do is to workout with me for the planet."

She continued, "There's a climate crisis that's a real emergency. So whether you are on your couch or on your yoga mat, will you join me for virtual Fire Drill Fridays? The future needs you! I need you."

The first virtual Fire Drill Friday, which Fonda partnered with Greenpeace USA on, will be held April 3 at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT.

Greenpeace also helped spread the word of the virtual rally with a star-studded video on Instagram.

In the clip, Chelsea Handler, Piper Perabo, Amber Valetta, Alyssa Milano, Norman Lear, and Marisa Tomei encourage others to join in the rally.

"Because everyone should be staying at home," Perabo says before Handler adds, "And we need to protect our climate during this difficult time, virtually."

Fonda's in-person rallies in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles have also been star-studded affairs.

And though she avoided arrest on the West coast, she was arrested several times in the nation's capital for her then-weekly demonstrations.

Some celebrities who have joined her in her rallies include Joaquin Phoenix, Rainn Wilson, Bonnie Wright, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and more.
