  • Jane Fonda, 83, says she is “so happy” about her decision to go gray in a new interview with Ellen Degeneres.

  • “Enough already with so much time wasted, so much money spent, so many chemicals—I’m through with that,” she said.

  • The Grace and Frankie star first debuted her silver hair at the 2020 Oscars.

Jane Fonda’s gray hair is here to stay. In a new interview with Ellen Degeneres, the Grace and Frankie star opened up about her decision to embrace her natural color at 83—and she’s feeling totally liberated.

“I tell you, I’m so happy I let it go gray,” Fonda told Degeneres. “Enough already with so much time wasted, so much money spent, so many chemicals—I’m through with that.”

Although Fonda has rocked all sorts of colors and styles over the years, we have to admit that this stunning silver is our favorite. Last year, the actress and activist debuted her silver hair at the 2020 Oscars, sending Twitter into a frenzy. She paired the ‘do with a recycled red gown, and looked simply fabulous of course.

Fonda’s hairstylist Jack Martin spent 7 hours transforming Fonda’s hair from her iconic blonde to a sophisticated silver. Martin wrote on Instagram that the look was inspired by the regrowth of her salt-and-pepper roots. “The rest was a little tired warm golden blonde,” he said. “Her goal color was a silver icy blonde to surprise everyone at the 2020 Oscars.”

But Fonda’s hair isn’t the only major change she’s making when it comes to appearances; she also pledged to never buy a new article of clothing again. As a longtime activist, her recent focus has been climate change—and the fashion industry plays a major role in waste and water consumption.

“You see this coat? I needed something red and I went out and found this coat on sale. This is the last article of clothing that I will ever buy,” she declared during a November 2019 protest on Capitol Hill.

It seems she’s still holding to her word. When she goes to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2021 Golden Globes, Fonda told Degeneres that she’ll be rocking a recycled outfit, just as she did for the 2020 Oscars.

“I prefer this kind of outfit than getting dressed up,” Fonda said of her red jogging suit. “I vowed a couple of years ago I would never buy any new clothes again. We spend too much money, we buy too many things, and then we get rid of them. We try to develop our identity by shopping, right? We gotta stop that—stop all this consumerism.”

“So I had to go through my closet and find out something that still fit me and I have worn before,” she added. “And I found something. I’m all set.”
