WLS-Ch. 7 reporter Janet Davies announced Friday she is leaving the ABC affiliate station after more than 36 years.

“COVID certainly has had an impact in some way on everyone. My heart goes out to those affected in big and little ways. With me, well, my time has come to an end with ABC7. It has been an honor and a joy to have worked at 190 North State Street for 37 years. To have had such breadth and depth in a broadcasting career is humbling,” Davies wrote on Facebook. In her statement, she clarified that she has not had the novel coronavirus.

Davies is known for her work as host of the lifestyles program “190 North” and co-host of Channel 7 1/4 u2032s annual New Year’s Eve broadcast with sports anchor Mark Giangreco. The news of Davies’ departure comes as Giangreco has been absent from Channel 7 for weeks. Station representatives have offered no explanation.

Davies, who grew up in Cincinnati and studied at Miami University in Ohio, joined WLS in August 1984. She lived in the Ravenswood neighborhood for many years until selling her five-bedroom home in August for $1.26 million. She told a Tribune reporter she was downsizing because she’s an empty nester. She praised her colleagues and viewers in her Friday announcement.

“Many at the station have been dear colleagues for years and working with them always made me better. Chicago viewers are kind, enlightening and their stories will forever have meaning and import. I was thinking about highlights, but every news story, 190 North, programming show, etc. WAS a highlight. For now, I will not be looking backward but forward. That’s just me. Stay tuned,” Davies wrote on Facebook.

More to come.
