Japan agrees to Russian oil embargo in principle

“The unity of the G7 is essential at this time and based on the G7 leaders’ statement, we decided to take measures to embargo Russian oil in principle,” Kishida told.

He said it was a “tough decision” as Japan “relies on imports for the majority of its energy resources.”

At the same time, Kishida did not provide a timeline for Japan's embargo of Russian oil imports. Earlier, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Koichi Hagiuda, said it was difficult for the country to join the European Union immediately due to its “limited resources” in connection with its plans to ban oil imports from Russia.

Following the G7 summit, which was attended by President Volodymyr Zelensky, G7 leaders confirmed that they would gradually reduce their dependence on Russian energy resources, including Russian oil.
