STORY: Japan’s big car makers are lagging rivals on going green.

That’s according to a new report by Greenpeace.

It ranked ten big automakers for their progress in decarbonisation.

Toyota came rock bottom.

The report says zero-emission vehicles make up less than 1% of its sales.

Environmentalists say it’s been far too slow to embrace EVs.

That’s a turnaround from two decades ago, when its Prius model pioneered hybrid cars.

In response, Toyota said it was working as fast as possible to slash its emissions.

The report ranked Nissan and Honda 8th and 9th respectively.

Greenpeace says Honda has no road map for achieving its own targets, while zero-emission sales had seen little growth at Nissan.

Honda said it continued to work towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

Nissan said it would continue to accelerate its electrification efforts.

The company had been an early adopter of EVs, with its Leaf model.

General Motors again topped the annual ranking.
