Over the course of domestic history, we’ve held certain truths to be self-evident when it comes to everyday household items: garden hoses are green, appliances are stainless steel, and fire extinguishers are red. But the last few years have seen designers thinking outside the box, reinterpreting unsightly products for aesthetes with an eye for good form. Boring hoses turned chic (think pink with cheetah-print hardware) at the hands of Garden Glory, lackluster appliances have gotten a kaleidoscopic refresh (rose-gold toasters, anyone?), and now even the humble fire extinguisher has been updated for a design-savvy audience.

The 129-year-old Japanese firefighter-equipment maker +maffs has designed an of-the-moment fire extinguisher that replaces the traditional cherry-red canister for a minimalist matte black or white exterior that any homeowner would be proud to display on their counter—which, when you think about it, is much more practical than hiding it away in a closet. Your kitchen could be up in flames by the time you even dig it out!

But the design isn’t the only thing that was overhauled. The fire-retardant powder is made with people-safe ingredients like vinegar which wipe away after use rather than destroying everything in sight. And a handy memory tag allows you to manually enter the expiration date, so you have a better chance of remembering to toss your extinguisher once it’s no longer effective. (Have you checked the date on yours lately?)

The fire extinguisher is currently selling for 10,000 yen, the equivalent of about $92 at press time, but sadly is only available in Japan. But this super-cute bird-inspired extinguisher can be yours. Here’s hoping American companies hop on the bandwagon. (Joanna Gaines, can you hear us?)
