Japanese embassy outraged by massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine

“The Embassy of Japan is deeply outraged by the repeated massive attack on the civilian population and civilian objects in Ukraine on New Year’s Eve, which resulted in the death and injury of civilians, including a Japanese journalist,” the embassy wrote.

Sekita works for the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s leading newspapers. He was injured when debris from a missile struck the Alfavito Hotel in central Kyiv. Five floors of the corner section of the hotel were heavily damaged in the incident.

The debris from the missile also damaged nearby residential buildings, and the capital’s largest concert hall – Palats Ukraina.

Sekita, 36, a photo-journalist, was pictured at the scene of the attack being helped to an ambulance. He appeared to have an injury to the leg, but it did not appear to be life-threatening.

During the massive Russian attack on Ukraine on Dec. 31, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down 12 of more than 20 Russian cruise missiles. The Russian cruise missiles targeted Kyiv, Khmelnytskyy, Zaporizhzhya and Mykolaiv oblasts — there were injuries in all of the regions, including children.

According to the President’s Office, in Kyiv there were two explosions in Kyiv’s Solomyanskyy district, south and west of the capital’s main railway station. Missile debris fell into a private house, and an elderly man was reported to have been killed.

Around 20 people were injured in Kyiv, including Sekita. Around a dozen people were reported to have been hospitalized, with one person in a critical condition.
