Japan's Air Force paint the sky over Olympic park

Jets streaked across the blue summer sky shortly after 12 p.m. (0300GMT) around the stadium. Spectators around the stadium waved and took out their smartphones to snap photos of passing planes.

The jets had begun their flight from an airbase in Saitama Prefecture, flying near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and around the Tokyo Tower before reaching the area near the stadium.

The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics was postponed by a year and will begin this Friday (July 23). The Blue Impulse are scheduled to fly over the stadium on the opening day but an exact timing will not be disclosed to the public to discourage spectators, as Tokyo is currently in the midst of a COVID-19 state of emergency.
