Japan's economy minister urges G7 energy stability

STORY: As the chair of the G7 this year, Japan will hold a ministerial meeting in Sapporo on April 15-16, ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima on May 19-21, to promote what it calls realistic energy transition.

"A stable supply of energy is of paramount importance. In addition to this, in response to climate change, which has been an issue for many years, it is necessary to achieve both decarbonisation (and stable energy supply), while promoting economic growth under these circumstances. We have to try to realise these three things, although this will be very difficult," Nishimura said.

"Not only the G7, but also countries around the world have their own economic and energy situations, so I think there are diverse paths. While acknowledging there are various ways to achieve this balance of a stable energy supply and decarbonisation, the goal remains the same, so we have to proceed with decarbonisation and remaining carbon-neutral, while pursuing a stable energy supply, that specific transition. We will work to realise this energy transition smoothly."
