Jared Goff's panicked interception sets up Eagles for commanding lead over Rams

Sunday’s Philadelphia Eagles win over the Los Angeles Rams was a stunner.

The Eagles, playing without injured starting quarterback Carson Wentz, used a dominant third quarter to turn a 13-13 halftime tie into a 30-13 lead over the juggernaut Rams. They held on for a 30-23 win.

Huge Goff turnover

The biggest play of the game was a critical Jared Goff interception that shut down a Rams drive and set up the Eagles for their third touchdown of the game.

Goff took the snap on third-and-1 at the Rams’ 35-yard line late in the quarter. He tripped and fell while dropping back after taking the snap under center. Rather than stay down and take the sack, which would have led to fourth-and-long and forced a likely punt, Goff panicked.

He stood back up and attempted to throw the ball while under immediate pressure from Eagles linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill. The ball flailed and fell immediately into the hands of safety Corey Graham, who returned the interception to the Rams’ 12-yard line.

Interception set up Eagles TD

Two plays later, Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood was in the end zone to give Philadelphia a 30-13 lead.

Had the Rams managed to score on that drive, they would have cut the Eagles’ lead to one possession. Instead, they dug a three-possession hole with one quarter remaining and ended up suffering one of the most stunning upsets of the NFL season.
